Plumber SEO Case Study: From Lost Leads to #2 for “Plumber Near Me”

This plumber SEO case study follows Silverback Plumbing and Drain, a company that had paid two agencies and had nothing it could verify. Our audit found every web lead going to a former agency’s inbox. Six months after the fix, the company ranks #2 for “plumber near me,” proven with its own Google data.

The short answer

What changed for this plumbing company?

Plumbing marketing in Texas: plumber tightening a pipe fitting with a wrench

Plumber SEO starts with the basics. We audited the website, Google Business Profile, citations and tracking together. Then we rerouted a lead form that was sending quote requests to a former agency, split emergency and planned-work pages, and tied every number to the client’s own Google accounts.

From 8 March to 4 September 2026, the site earned 205,000 search impressions and held a top three average position on five money terms. It also drove 841 Business Profile interactions.

The starting point

The plumber SEO problems holding back a 4.9-star company

The work was never the issue. 503 reviews at 4.9 stars proved that. Two previous agencies had left gaps nobody inside the company could see.

Quote requests went to the wrong inbox

The contact form still sent every submission to a previous agency’s email. For as long as it was set up that way, those requests never reached the business. We fixed it within days of finding it.

No way to verify past work

Search Console history barely existed, so the owner had no way to check what either agency had delivered.

Business details that didn’t match

Name, address and service details differed between the website and listings across the web. That kind of mismatch quietly erodes trust with Google.

One page for two kinds of customer

A burst pipe at 2am and a planned repipe quote are different searches from people in different frames of mind. Both landed on the same generic page.

What we did

The plumber SEO plan: an audit first, then four workstreams

We fixed the basics before building anything new, then ran four workstreams side by side. It’s the same plumber SEO process we use for plumbing companies across Texas, and it works because it treats the website, the profile and the tracking as one system.

01

Audit everything before building

Website, Business Profile, citations and tracking were reviewed together, and the lead form was rerouted the same week. Most plumbing SEO problems start with basics left unfixed.

02

Split emergency and planned work

Emergency pages were built for speed and a prominent phone number. Water heater, repipe and gas line pages were built for reading and comparing.

03

Put 503 reviews to work

Rating, services, service area, hours and photos now match across the profile and the site. Schema makes those details readable for search engines and AI tools.

04

Cover Helotes and San Antonio

Helotes pages protect the home market while San Antonio pages bring the volume. The site now holds position 2.9 for “plumber helotes” on 2,361 impressions.

05

Report from the client’s own accounts

Search Console, GA4 and Business Profile are connected, with call taps and form submissions tracked as events. The client can open every number directly.

06

Keep the phone at the center

Every emergency page puts a tap-to-call button above the fold. For a 24-hour plumber, the call is the conversion, so every design choice points to it.

What comes next

Where the next plumber SEO gains are

Good reporting shows what still needs work, not only what went well.

Convert impressions already won

“water heater repair san antonio” has 2,648 impressions at position 39.4. That demand needs deeper content and sharper titles, not new pages.

Lift click-through rate

Site-wide click-through rate is 0.2% at an average position of 20. Better title tags and review stars in results are the fastest win left in this account.

Lessons

What this plumber SEO case study teaches other plumbing companies

The biggest lesson from this plumber SEO case study has nothing to do with clever tactics. The most expensive problem on the account was a contact form sending leads to the wrong inbox. No amount of content or link building would have fixed that, and nobody noticed because nobody was looking at the whole system at once.

That is why we start every plumber SEO engagement with an audit of the website, the Google Business Profile, the citations and the tracking together. Problems hide in the gaps between those pieces. A form can look fine on the page and still send its submissions somewhere else. A Business Profile can have great reviews and still list a different phone number than the website.

The second lesson is ownership. Silverback paid two agencies without ever holding direct access to its own Search Console, GA4 or Business Profile data. When the numbers live in the agency’s accounts, the business has no way to judge the work. Every plumbing company should own those accounts and give its agency user access, not the other way around. Google explains how to add users to Search Console in a few minutes.

The third lesson is patience with the right metrics. Branded searches and profile interactions moved first. The competitive terms like “plumber near me” followed within the six-month window. Judging plumber SEO on the first month of traffic would have missed the real story.

Checklist

A plumber SEO checklist you can run this week

You don’t need an agency to spot the most common plumber SEO problems. Run these checks on your own plumbing website and profile:

  • Submit your own contact form and confirm the email arrives in your inbox, not someone else’s.
  • Call the number on your website from a phone that isn’t yours and confirm it rings through at every hour you advertise.
  • Compare your name, address and phone on your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook and Angi. They should match exactly.
  • Check who owns your Google accounts. You should be the owner of Search Console, GA4 and your Business Profile.
  • Search your main service plus your town in an incognito window and note where you appear in the map pack and the organic results.
  • Count your service pages. Drain cleaning, water heaters, repiping, gas lines and emergency repair should each have a dedicated page.
  • Read your last ten reviews and reply to any without a response.

If more than two of these plumber SEO checks fail, fixing them will usually do more for your calls than any new campaign. Google’s own Business Profile guidelines are a good reference for the profile checks.

Search intent

Plumber SEO for emergency and planned searches needs different pages

Plumber fitting a pipe with specialized tools

Someone searching “plumber near me” at 2am with water on the floor wants one thing: a phone number and proof you will show up. They will not read three paragraphs about your company history. An emergency page should load fast, show the phone number at the top, state your hours honestly and show your rating.

Someone researching a water heater replacement or a whole-house repipe behaves differently. They compare options, read about tank versus tankless, look for pricing guidance and check reviews over several days. A planned-work page should answer those questions in depth, with clear sections, photos of real jobs and an easy way to request a quote.

When both searches land on one generic services page, neither customer gets what they need. Splitting them is one of the simplest structural changes a plumbing company can make, and it is part of why this account now ranks in the top three for both emergency and water heater searches.

Good plumber SEO starts with this kind of split, because Google rewards the page that best matches what the searcher wants in that moment.

The same logic applies to drain cleaning, sewer line and slab leak searches. Each has its own urgency and its own questions. Drain cleaning is often same-day work, so the page should show availability and a phone number. Slab leak and sewer line work are larger jobs, so the page should explain the diagnostic process, the repair options and what the homeowner can expect to pay. Matching each page to the moment behind the search is what turns rankings into booked jobs.

Two markets

Plumber SEO across two markets: Helotes and San Antonio

Silverback is based in Helotes but serves the whole San Antonio area. Many plumbing companies in that position build one homepage and hope Google figures out the rest. It rarely does.

We gave each market its own clear signals. Helotes content speaks to the home market and the neighborhoods closest to the shop. San Antonio content targets the higher search volume across the metro. The Business Profile service area, the website’s location pages and the schema all tell the same story.

The result is position 2.9 for “plumber helotes” and position 2.0 for “plumber near me” in the same six-month window. The same plumber SEO approach works for plumbers in any Texas suburb that sits next to a larger city, from Katy and Houston to Round Rock and Austin.

In the client’s words

What the owner said after the switch

“We were very upset on how we would find out on our own that previous marketing companies we hired were not doing their job. They took the time to find all the discrepancies within our website and more. Since being with them, things have dramatically changed for us as a company.”

FAQ

Plumber SEO questions we hear most

Ask for direct access to your own Google Search Console, GA4 and Business Profile, not a PDF report. If an agency can’t or won’t give you access to your own accounts, that tells you what you need to know. Silverback paid two agencies without ever having that access.

Branded search and Business Profile activity usually move within weeks. Competitive terms like “plumber near me” typically take three to six months to reach page one, and longer against established competitors. This account reached position 2.0 inside that window.

They work together. The profile drove 841 interactions in six months, but it ranks partly on the strength of the website behind it. The website is also where a repipe or water heater quote gets read and compared.

There’s no magic number, but volume compounds. 503 reviews at 4.9 stars is a lead competitors can’t copy quickly. It’s a big reason branded search alone delivers 212 clicks.

No. Emergency searches turn into calls within minutes, and a missed 2am call is a lost job and a likely bad review. Advertise only the hours you staff, or use an answering service or AI call agent to cover the rest.

It matters more for trust than as a direct ranking signal. Put your license, insurance and years in business on the website and the Business Profile, because that’s what a worried homeowner checks before calling.

A good one proves what changed, over what time, measured by which tool. This one uses the client’s own Search Console, GA4 and Business Profile data for a fixed six-month window, so every number can be checked. Results in your market will depend on competition and your starting point.
