Landscaping case study · San Antonio, TX
This landscaping SEO case study follows Design Scapes Inc., a company that grew on referrals and social media with no website at all. When HOA and commercial clients started asking for one, we built it. Six months later, organic clicks are up 90% and Google search is the largest source of traffic on the site.
The short answer
Landscaping SEO starts with a website worth finding. We built a portfolio-led website with separate paths for homeowners and commercial buyers. We added a content calendar built around watering days, freeze prep and sod season, and published the price ranges most landscapers avoid.
From 6 March to 5 September 2026, compared with the six months before, organic clicks rose from 371 to 707 and impressions from 104,000 to 275,000. Organic search grew from 34% to 50.9% of all sessions.
The starting point
Five stars across 53 reviews proved the work was excellent. The business needed a way for clients outside its referral network to find it.
Every lead came from Instagram, referrals or word of mouth. There was nothing built for anyone to find in search.
HOAs and commercial property managers wanted to see a professional site before they would take a call.
A homeowner planning a backyard and an HOA sourcing a maintenance contract need different pages, proof and language.
Watering days, freeze prep, sod timing and drought stages are searched heavily every year, and nothing from this business answered them.
What we did
We let the portfolio do the selling, then built landscaping SEO content around what local homeowners actually search for, season by season.
01
Residential and commercial each got their own navigation, service pages, photos and proof, so neither buyer had to dig through the other’s content.
02
Pages on watering days, sprinkler freeze temperatures, sod timing and drought stages answer questions that come back every year. “san antonio watering days” now ranks at position 6.8.
03
Answering “how much does landscaping cost for a small yard” filters out shoppers and pre-sells serious buyers. That page ranks at position 3.3 with a 10.7% click-through rate.
04
Landscape lighting and sod installation each got a detailed page instead of a bullet on a services list. Together they already earn 5,902 impressions.
05
Categories, services, service area and booking now match across both, so the Map Pack listing and the website back each other up. The profile drove 435 interactions in six months.
06
Real project photos, optimized as WebP with descriptive alt text, carry the design pages. Buyers judge landscaping by what they can see, so the work leads every page.

Lessons
The first lesson from this landscaping SEO case study is that referrals have a ceiling. Word of mouth built Design Scapes a five-star reputation, but it could not reach the HOA boards and commercial property managers who start their search online. Those buyers wanted to see a real website before they would pick up the phone.
The second lesson is that landscaping SEO follows the calendar. Homeowners search for watering days in summer, freeze prep in winter and sod installation in spring. A landscaper who publishes a clear, local answer to each of those questions earns traffic every year the page stays live, without paying for a single click.
The third lesson is honesty about price. Most landscapers avoid publishing numbers because every yard is different. Publishing realistic ranges does the opposite of what they fear. It screens out people who were never going to hire a professional and gives serious buyers the confidence to call.

Checklist
Use this landscaping SEO list to see how your own website stacks up:
Google’s SEO Starter Guide covers the basics behind most of these checks.
If several of these checks fail, fixing them is usually the fastest landscaping SEO win available, well before any new content or advertising.
Seasonal content

Landscaping demand in Texas moves with the weather. Summer heat brings watering restrictions and drought stage changes. A hard freeze brings questions about sprinkler systems and plant damage. Spring and fall bring sod, planting and cleanup work.
Each of those moments creates a burst of searches from homeowners who are not yet ready to hire, but who will remember the company that answered their question. A page about watering days ranks, earns trust and puts the business name in front of homeowners months before they need a new lawn or an irrigation repair.
The key is to keep these pages accurate and local. Watering rules and freeze dates vary by city and water utility, so a generic national article rarely ranks against a well maintained local page. On this account, “san antonio watering days” holds position 6.8 and “when can i water my lawn” brings clicks on its own.
For landscaping SEO, the best seasonal pages also point to a service. A freeze prep guide can link to irrigation repair. A watering days page can link to drought-tolerant design. That way the traffic earned by a helpful answer has a clear next step toward a paid job, and the service pages gain internal links from content Google already trusts.
Total traffic
Total sessions on the site went down during this period, and that is worth explaining. Paid and social activity was cut back, so the visits those channels used to bring dropped. At the same time, organic sessions rose 31.8% and organic key events, the tracked quote actions, rose 35.5%.
In other words, the business stopped buying visits and started earning them. Organic visitors also stay longer and convert better, which is why average engagement time rose from 32 to 42 seconds. For a landscaper, fewer but better visitors who request quotes are worth far more than a spike of social traffic that never calls.
This is a common pattern in landscaping SEO. When a business stops paying for social reach and starts earning search visibility, total visits can drop for a while even as quote requests rise. Judge the work on organic sessions, key events and calls, not on the total visitor count.
