Painting Contractor SEO Case Study: Page One in Five Weeks

This painting contractor SEO case study follows A Plus Painting Contractor, a company with 24 years of five-star work and a small website that couldn’t rank for any single service. Once the owner said yes to SEO, we built out the full site. Five weeks later, it ranks #1 for “interior painting contractor san antonio.”

The short answer

How did a painter reach page one in five weeks?

Worker painting a window shutter light blue on the outside of a yellow house

Painting contractor SEO starts with a page for every job you want. We mapped real search demand first. Then we launched 8 service pages, 5 service area pages and 24 articles in one push, and synced the site with the Google Business Profile.

Five of the new service pages now hold position 1.0 or 2.0 on high-intent searches. Indexed pages grew from under 20 to 53, and impressions rose 108% over six months.

The starting point

The painting contractor SEO problems holding back a 24-year company

Thirty Google reviews at a perfect 5.0 said the work was good. The website couldn’t name any one of eight services or any one of the towns that call.

Eight services, one page

Interior, exterior, cabinet refinishing, epoxy flooring, carpentry, moldings, tile and remodeling were folded into one section that couldn’t rank for any of them.

Five towns, zero pages

Boerne, Schertz, Helotes, New Braunfels and Alamo Heights send painting searches every month, with nowhere on the site to land.

Nothing for the research phase

No articles answered what homeowners ask before letting someone paint their kitchen cabinets.

A site built to wait

The original build held the name and reviews well for years. It was never set up to compete in search.

Worth saying

We didn’t teach anyone to paint

Twenty-four years of clean, five-star work earned that rating before a single new page went live. Our job was to make sure the people already searching for that work could find it.

What we did

The painting contractor SEO plan: architecture first, then writing

Every page was mapped to a real search and launched in one push, so Google could crawl and judge the whole site together.

01

Pull real search terms first

Cabinet refinishing, exterior painting contractor and kitchen cabinet painter searches shaped the site map, so no page exists that nobody searches for.

02

Build a page for every service

All eight services got their own page, headings, photos and call to action. 8 service pages are live and indexed.

03

Build a page for every town

Boerne, Schertz, Helotes, New Braunfels and Alamo Heights each got a page written for that community.

04

Answer homeowners’ questions first

24 articles cover what to ask before hiring a flooring, tile or molding contractor, the searches people run before they call.

05

Sync the site with the Business Profile

Name, address and phone match on every page and the profile, with the 5.0 rating and 30 reviews shown where visitors can see them.

06

Link it all together

Service pages, town pages and articles link to each other, so Google understands how the site fits together and visitors always have a next step.

Rankings

Painting contractor SEO case study rankings: where the new pages rank

Five new service pages hold position 1.0 or 2.0 on searches that end in a phone call.

None of these rankings existed before the rebuild, because there were no interior or exterior pages to hold them.

The results

Painting contractor SEO results you can check

Search Console, GA4 and Business Profile data pulled 5 September 2026, with new pages live since the first week of August.

53

Pages indexed

Up from under 20. A page that isn’t indexed can’t rank, earn an impression or earn a click.

30,400

Search impressions, up 108%

Up from 14,600 in the prior six months, and the latest 28 days ran ahead of the 28 before.

69.4%

Organic engagement rate

Up from 58.7%. Average time for organic visitors nearly doubled, from 30 seconds to 56.

271

Business Profile interactions

From 1,171 views, holding steady rather than growing. Improving that is next on the list.

Results vary by market, competition, starting point and services purchased. Past results do not guarantee future outcomes.

What comes next

Where the next painting contractor SEO gains are

Honest reporting names what still needs work.

Let clicks catch up

Impressions doubled as the site started appearing for hundreds of new queries, many still low in results. Clicks follow as those positions climb and titles get tuned.

Turn on conversion tracking

GA4 has no key events configured yet, so calls and form fills can’t be reported. We say so rather than presenting sessions as leads, and it’s the current priority.

Lessons

What this painting contractor SEO case study teaches other painters

The first lesson from this painting contractor SEO case study is that a good website and a website built to rank are different things. A Plus Painting’s original site did its job for years. It held the name, the phone number and the reviews. But with every service folded into one section, Google had nothing specific to show for “cabinet refinishing” or “exterior painting contractor.”

The second lesson is that architecture comes before writing. We pulled the real search terms first, then built one page per service and one page per town. Launching them together let Google crawl and judge the whole structure at once, which is part of why page one arrived in five weeks.

The third lesson is to read the numbers honestly. Impressions doubled while clicks lagged. That is normal when a site suddenly appears for hundreds of new searches, most of them low in the results at first. Judging the work on the terms that bring revenue, not the blended average, gives the true picture.

Checklist

A painting contractor SEO checklist you can run this week

Use these painting contractor SEO checks on your own site:

  • List every service you offer and check that each one has its own page: interior, exterior, cabinets, epoxy, drywall and any specialty work.
  • List the towns that call you most and check that each has a page written for that community.
  • Check how many of your pages Google has indexed using the Pages report in Search Console. Google’s guide to the Page indexing report explains what each status means.
  • Add real project photos with descriptive alt text to every service page.
  • Answer the questions homeowners ask before hiring a painter, such as how long paint lasts, what prep is included and how to choose a finish.
  • Match your name, address and phone across your website and Business Profile.
  • Set up conversion tracking for calls and form fills so you can measure leads, not just visits.

Multi-service sites

Painting contractor SEO for companies that do more than paint

Home services crew in hard hats reviewing plans together on a job site

Many painting companies also refinish cabinets, install epoxy floors, hang drywall or handle carpentry and trim. These are separate searches with separate customers. A homeowner looking for a kitchen cabinet painter is not searching for “painting contractor.”

The fix is simple: give each trade its own page, written for its own search, with its own photos and call to action. This site now holds position 1.0 for “kitchen cabinet painter” and appears for cabinet refinishing, epoxy flooring, moldings and tile searches because each one has a dedicated page.

For painting contractor SEO, this is usually the single biggest opportunity on an older site. The work is already being done. The website just needs to name it.

Averages

Why a blended average position can mislead painting contractors

Search Console shows an average position for the whole site, and on this account that number reads 23.8. On its own it sounds poor. In reality, it is a blend of every query the site appears for, and adding hundreds of new queries pulls the average down even while the important terms improve.

The same site ranks 1.0 for interior painting contractor and 2.0 for exterior painting contractor in San Antonio. Those are the searches that turn into estimates. When you review painting contractor SEO results, filter Search Console to the handful of terms that match your best jobs and judge progress there.

The same filter helps when you talk to any agency. Ask them to show the positions for your five most valuable searches, not the site average. Good painting contractor SEO reporting always starts with the jobs you want more of.

FAQ

Painting contractor SEO questions we hear most

One page per service, one per community served, and enough articles to answer what homeowners ask before calling. For this client that meant 8 service pages, 5 area pages and 24 articles.

Yes, if each has its own page written for its own search. This site holds position 1.0 for “kitchen cabinet painter” and appears for cabinet refinishing, epoxy flooring, moldings and tile searches because each has a dedicated page.

They measure different things. Going from under 20 pages to 53 means the site suddenly appears for hundreds of new queries, most starting far down the results. Visibility rises first, and clicks catch up as positions climb and titles are tuned.

On its own it says little, because it’s a blend of every query the site appears for. This site ranks 1.0 for interior and 2.0 for exterior painting contractor while the blended average reads 23.8. Judge painting contractor SEO on the terms that bring revenue.

It’s enough to hold a name, phone number and reputation. It isn’t enough to compete for searches like cabinet refinishing or exterior painting contractor, which each need a dedicated page.

They aren’t alternatives. The profile wins the Map Pack and the quick call, while the website wins the research phase and gives the profile credibility.

This site reached page one on its top two terms five weeks after the new pages went live. That speed depended on a strong reputation and an existing domain. Newer sites or more competitive markets usually take three to six months.
